Join us for an intimate and inspiring weekend celebrating innovation in stained glass and glassblowing, hosted at our studio on the historic site of the Red House Glass Cone, opposite the Stourbridge Glass Museum — free parking available. Tickets are free of charge, but we do encourage people to spend in our gallery shop to help keep our free events sustainable

Glass artist Elliot Walker is breaking new ground by bridging the gap between glass blowers and stained glass artists. Through his Bespoke Sheet Glass initiative, Elliot is creating unique, hard-to-find glass types not available from contemporary manufacturers, opening exciting opportunities for stained glass artists to shape the materials they work with.

This special event offers:

Extraordinary visit to Blowfish Glass for their Sheet Glass weekend. So glad I booked, as full. Many of us there, along with me, were stained glass, artists and enthusiasts along with the interested and curious. We were treated to a consummate demonstration by master glass maker and artist, Elliot Walker who with his team, showed how he creates the most beautiful sheet glass, an extremely demanding and complex process. Engaguing, passionate and humorous, Elliot talked about how he has gone about learning the skills, almost lost in this country, to create unique and stunning sheet glass for stained glass artists to use. Fascinating conversations going on between Elliot, the Blowfish Gallery team, led by Bethany also a glass artist, and those attending the demonstrations and visiting the gallery. These events seem a focus for this important initiative to both re-establish this skill and take it further in an exciting, contemporary direction. Oh yes, and I bought far more of glass than I imagined I would and left excited at the challenge of how to use Elliot’s glass to do it justice!

Fantastic demonstration and opportunity to get up close to the process.  The whole team where really approachable and open to questions, and went out of their way to explain the nuances to how the pieces were made and their thought processes, which gave a real insight into the ‘why and how’.  
Very different to other ‘glass blowing’ demonstrations I’ve been to, and would be of equal interest to those experienced or new to glass, as well as stained glass artists and other glass enthusiasts.
Having the gallery and opportunity to choose and buy pieces after was also completely unique and really allowed you to appreciate the craftsmanship much more than buying online.  Can’t wait to incorporate them onto my work (top tip - if you want an off-cut box, get there early on Saturday!  Trust me, it’s worth it!!!)

Bespoke Sheet Glass Weekend — Feb 28- March 1st

Start this class as a beginner and leave as a glass-making addict. In this full day workshop, you will learn each step of the glass blowing process from experienced and encouraging glassmaking experts in their inspiring studio! 

With all of the materials, supplies and equipment needed to make your own glass provided in this workshop, learning to blow glass couldn’t be easier. 

Although you’re building your technical skills, there’s still room in this workshop for creativity- after all, you're learning from top glass-blowing artists! With all the colours you could dream of, get experimental and let your imagination take the reins to style your glass. In the beginning of this workshop, you will learn how to prepare different colour and texture techniques to apply to your glass pieces. 

You will be able to make a bowl or paperweight and choose a final form from the following list of functional objects:
- Drinking glass
- Vase
- Decorative bauble

Master how to safely and confidently heat molten glass in an 1100-degree furnace, which you will then gather and remove from the furnace using historical hand-forged tools. Make sure you’re full of hot air for the next step! Once you have perfected removing your glass from the furnace, it’s time to learn how to sculpt and blow your own glass. 

After a hard and hot graft, it’s time to chill out! Cooling your glass is equally as fascinating and important as heating your glass, at the end of the workshop, you will learn how to safely and properly cool your glass like a professional. 

Many students learn best through a combination of demonstrations and a hands-on interactive teaching approach. This workshop is no exception! You will watch a demonstration and then safely learn more about each step in the glass-blowing process by having a go yourself.

Not only will you get to take your three perfect and personalised glass pieces home at the end of the workshop, you will also be leaving with a full understanding of the glass-making process and techniques, as well as a burning hunger to create more gorgeous glass.

If you thought glassblowing was only for people with strong muscles, it's just the weight of the broom, and it's a beautiful art full of gentle movement working with this wonderful material. This course was a full day of making and helping in a small group and taking home you own design. The full day beginner masterclass was a fabulous experience. I'd wanted to try glass blowing for a long time and finally had the opportunity. 

I was in a group of 5 and the instructor, Katie had an assistant, Olivia. Katie was brilliant. It was obvious that she was very experienced and talented. She was hyper aware of what was going on around her, with 5 complete novices to keep an eye on and she kept us all super safe - no injuries from the extremely hot furnaces and glass. The instruction was spot on and was delivered confidently and with humour. I was feeling very tired by the end of the 6 hours, while Katie was alert to the end.

The lunch was a lovely buffet style and gave us a chance to chat and learn about what had brought us all to Blowfish at the Red House Glass Cone for this experience. I am a local though 2 participants had travelled from Warwick and another from Germany! 

I am excited to collect my 3 finished pieces in a couple of weeks to see how the colours turn-out when they have cooled. I thoroughly recommend this experience to anyone wanting to experience glass blowing or any creative glass activity.

What an incredible experience! We were welcomed with a brew and friendly chat followed by health and safety, Beth is a great teacher, demonstrating and then supporting us one to one. We were able to make a paperweight, a bowl and a vase or glass. We could select our colour for the glass as well.

The studio is lovely and gets very warm. Lunch is provided but take your own drinks and snacks for in between.

As this is a 1:1 activity there is a lot of watching others and taking it all in,  so prepare to get comfy. Toilets are on site and a cafe and souvenir shop. Parking is free and right opposite the studio.

My glassware was received in the post 5 days later, brilliant!

I cannot recommend this experience and Blowfish highly enough, such an incredible experience, thank you so much Beth!

Do you have any dietary requirements?

If you’ve completed a beginner class with Blowfish and are keen to keep going—whether that’s getting more hands-on time or creating more polished pieces—our Returning Program is a great next step.

This class focuses on Art with a Purpose, giving you more time to think about form and colour, with the emphasis on making one well-considered piece rather than lots of work.

What will you be making?

You’ll create a glass terrarium, working one-on-one with one of our glassmakers. Pieces of this size and complexity are always made as a team, just as we do in our studio.

Working together like this gives you the chance to build more advanced skills while refining your forming, assembly, and finishing techniques on a multi-part object.

Returning Beginners

Both Beth and Kate were very welcoming, are great teachers and are clearly passionate about their glassblowing art, which comes through in their enthusiasm to teach. We built on the basic skills we learnt in our first session and made three pieces of varying complexity. We would recommend this course to anyone who wants to learn more about glassblowing and have fun while doing it!

It's the second time I have attended the courses at Blowfish, and Katherine and Bethany are just incredible - knowledgeable, funny, great instructors with a lot of patience. You get to spend the whole day learning and trying glassblowing techniques with incredible glassblowers and bring home some pretty mementoes. The workshop is clean, organized, and really well equipped, and you are surrounded by glassblowing history. If you are curious about glassblowing, cannot recommend enough!

We were given the opportunity to improve our skills by trying lots of different techniques , like joining 2 separate pieces of glass together and making an object that has to be the correct size for a stopper to fit inside. Everything you will need is provided in this workshop- it literally couldn't be easier to learn this crafty skill! 

Gain glassblowing skills and exercise your creativity while in the presence of experienced glassblowing artists! Explore an array of vibrant colours to use in your glass and get experimental with grand silver and copper leaf!

You are guaranteed to make a selection of the following glassware ornaments and art pieces in the theme of your event: 
- Bauble
- Paperweight
- Bowl (suction bowls are really fun to create!)

Learn how to safely and comfortably heat molten glass in a 1100 degree furnace and master how to gather and remove your glass from the furnace with historical hand forged tools. Now blow and form your glass! 
With a mixture of step by step demonstrations and hands-on guidance, you can learn through trying each technique yourself with the guidance of your encouraging teacher! 

Take home and display with pride your original glass pieces! You will leave this workshop with a comprehensive understanding of glass blowing approaches, methods and techniques as well as a day to remember forever!
